BC Museums Association (BCMA) gratefully accepts donations to support, empower and advocate on behalf for the museum community. We are a provincially incorporated non-profit society and a registered charitable organization that works to create a bright future for BC’s museum, gallery and heritage sector through networking, advocacy, innovation and professional development. Donations of $20 or more receive a charitable tax receipt.
Your support helps us create a bright future for BC’s museum, gallery and related communities.
BCMA has been the professional hub and industry association for the province’s museums, galleries, and other related memory institutions since 1957. Over the last 60 years, BCMA has helped grow the sector from fewer than 50 members to just over 400 today. We advocate on behalf of and support organizations from small volunteer-run societies to the biggest museums in the province. The BCMA annual conference has been held in 32 communities across BC, and our members are located in 144 communities across all regions of the province.
One of BCMA’s main responsibilities is to support member organizations and individuals through professional development. In the early years, this took the form of regular seminars on basic museum management. In 1967, BCMA took a major step towards supporting all members across the province by starting a Museum Advisor program. The Museum Advisor could travel the province and provide information and assistance to smaller museums outside the metropolitan cores.
Today, BCMA continues this legacy through regional training workshops hosted in various communities each spring, a mentorship program that pairs emerging museum professionals and established leaders and monthly webinars delivered by BCMA members.
Our bursary program provides financial assistance to BCMA members and the BCMA Awards for Outstanding Achievement recognize and celebrate individuals, institutions and companies who have made a significant contribution to BC’s museum, galleries and heritage community.
Advocacy, research and communications builds awareness about the value and impacts of our members and the BC cultural sector among policymakers and the general public.
The BCMA actively communicates with its membership through a variety of channels. The Roundup Newsletter (now our Roundup magazine) has been active since 1960, and in 2015 the BCMA launched the monthly Hoot members e-newsletter. The BCMA is also on Facebook and Twitter, and in 2017 launched a private industry Facebook group for professionals and volunteers to network and share resources among themselves. BCMA also facilitates a very popular email listserv that is the go to reaches people across Canada.
