The BC Museums Association applauds the BC Government for new funding announced today for the arts, cultural heritage and creative industries sectors:

  • $15 million increase over three years to the BC Arts Council
  • $50 million in funding to First Peoples’ Cultural Council to support the revitalization of Indigenous languages
  • $3 million increase to Creative BC
  • $6 million to increase funding to Aboriginal Friendship Centres

Earlier this year, the BC Museums Association made a submission to the Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services advocating for increased funding for museums, culture and heritage. In response to our submission, and those made by other organizations including Heritage BC and the Alliance for Arts and Culture, the Standing Committee recommended that the provincial government increase funding to BC Arts Council, increase funding to small museums, Indigenous cultural centres and organizations in the heritage sector and to create a capital arts infrastructure fund to support museums and cultural facilities throughout the province. We are delighted to see the Province beginning to address those recommendations with BC Budget 2018.
