The BCMA is always looking for great presenters and topics for our monthly peer-to-peer education webinars.

Do you have a skill or technique you want to teach to your colleagues in BC’s museum sector?  Do you like to share the successes (and failures) of best practices used in projects or processes at your museum?  Join our growing family of webinar presenters!

Webinars run from noon-1pm PST.  They feature a 35-40 minute practical presentation and 15 minutes of questions (times approximate).

Our audiences are primarily museum workers in BC, but also include colleagues from BC’s broader GLAM sector and across Canada.

BCMA webinars are noon-hour presentations on the third Tuesday of every month.  We use the Zoom webinar platform*, with presentations involving screen-sharing PowerPoint slides and text-chat question/answer.

*The Zoom webinar platform may be blocked by corporate firewalls. Consider trying to attend a webinar to see if it works on your computer. Please talk with your IT department if you have questions, and we will provide ample opportunity to test with you before your webinar.

Your Topic:

Your webinar topic should be specific enough to cover in 40 minutes and provide attendees something practical they can apply in their own museum contexts.  Our audience feedback suggests that more specific webinars with practical applicability are more popular and are found most useful.

Too general: Museum Exhibits

A better topic: Making better display cases quicker and for less money

Keep in mind that the majority of BC museums are small organizations, often with annual operating budgets under $100,000.  Please ensure your topic is applicable to smaller organizations.

  • Public Programming and Education
  • Community Engagement
  • Marketing, Fundraising and/or Communications
  • Collections Management and Storage
  • Exhibitions
  • New Techniques and Technology

The BCMA encourages engaging and practical presentations.  Successful proposals will be sent a how-to guide on preparing strong presentations.  Please keep in mind that visuals (images, videos, GIFs, etc) are strongly recommended, and that attendees should have something practical they can implement at their organization after the webinar.

What you’ll need:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (or another presentation platform that can go full screen)
  • Microphone (your computer’s built in microphone works, or iPhone-style headphones)
  • Your presentation script (print it out! Zoom will block your “Presenter Mode” notes)
  • A quiet room where you won’t be disturbed
  • Optional: a webcam if you want to show something live on-air

We encourage webinar presenters to create a handout or resource sheet to accompany their presentation.  This will be distributed shortly after the webinar.

BCMA Webinars are recorded and placed in our Webinar Archive.  Recordings are available for free to BCMA members as well as to attendees of that webinar.

Webinar Host Proposal Form

  • BCMA Webinars are hosted at noon on the third Tuesday of every month. You may select more than one potential presentation date.
  • PowerPoint presentations should be approximately 40-minutes long. Presentations should include images as examples and short text to emphasize points.
  • Webinar hosts must have a computer with a microphone and reliable internet connection. We recommend hosts be in a quiet office without distractions and/or use a headset/heaphones with a microphone built in - iPhone style headphones work great.
  • What resources can you provide attendees? These take-away resources could be a sheet of tips, best practice recommendations, instructions, further resources, etc. that can be sent to attendees after the webinar. While you are not required to create resources, it is highly recommended.
