The BC Museums Association is excited to announce the launch of BC Museums Week 2017!
Join the BCMA and museums from around BC as we celebrate and highlight the work of our members, discuss important themes for the sector, and work together to build a stronger future.
The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed that May 14-21, 2017 shall be known as “BC Museums Week,” recognizing, among other things, “the importance of museums, art galleries, historic sites, cultural centres and other memory institutions as keepers of legacy, places of learning, and drivers for the economic and social well-being of our communities.”
BC Museums Week is perfectly situated in the international museum calendar as it includes International Museum Day (IMD), an ICOM-sanctioned celebration now in its 40th year that takes place annually on May 18.
The objective of IMD is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” Last year, IMD featured more than 35,000 participating museums in 145 countries. ICOM’s theme for this year’s IMD is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.”
The BCMA invites all BC museums, art galleries, historic sites, cultural centres, and other related memory institutions to participate in BC Museums Week 2017 and International Museum Day. Organizations are welcome to participate in whatever way they choose, from tweets to teas, programs to promotions, emails to events, etc. ICOM has released a resource kit for IMD 2017 that includes event examples and step-by-step instructions for planning and promoting activities.
